Client Stories

Meet Terry! Terry was once living in a 24-hour CILA with other individuals with intellectual disabilities. While Terry was capable of competitive employment, he instead was working  at a workshop for individuals with disabilities. Terry always wanted more. He wanted a job n the community, his own place, and just to have a “regular” life. Terry continued to advocate for himself and his case manager at Prairieland Service Coordination sent his referral packet to Supporting Community Independence (SCI). SCI and Terry met and it was a perfect match! Terry moved in to a townhouse in Edwardsville, IL with a roommate. SCI quickly began working with Terry to strengthen his independent living skills and connect him with community resources to best support him. Terry was then hired at Goodwill in Glen Carbon, IL. Terry was ecstatic and earning regular paychecks. He then decided that it was time to move on and apply at his dream company… Wal-Mart! Terry was hired at Wal-Mart as a janitor and quickly went from part-time to working a full-time schedule. Terry continued to advocate for himself and with the assistance of SCI, it was time for Terry to make another big change in his life. Terry always wanted his own place and somewhere he could kick back and relax after a long day at work. Terry applied for affordable housing through the Madison County Housing Authority and was selected for the brand-new senior housing apartments in Edwardsville, IL! Terry is loving his new place and everything that he has accomplished in just a little over 1 year!

Meet Robert! Robert was once living in a 24-hour CILA with other individuals with intellectual disabilities. Robert used to attend a workshop setting for individuals with disabilities, but always wanted competitive employment.  Robert's ISC sent his referral packet to Supporting Community Independence and he was accepted into the program.  Since being admitted, Robert has achieved many things.  Robert now lives in a 3-bedroom townhouse in Edwardsville, IL with a roommate.  He works at HomeGoods and regularly volunteers at the Humane Society. Robert also achieved a life-long dream - seeing the ocean! Last year, Robert saved up his money from working and took a trip to Destin, FL with our QIDP.  Robert said it was amazing and is already planning his next vacation!

Meet Tineka! Tineka was once living in a 24-hour CILA and attended a workshop setting for individuals with disabilities. It was always Tineka's dream to live on her own and to get a job in the community.  Tineka worked really hard on building upon her community living skills while living at the CILA.  Tineka's ISC then sent her referral packet to SCI and she was accepted into the program.  Tineka moved into a 3-bedroom townhouse in Edwardsville, IL.  Tineka is currently looking for a roommate who shares similar interests and values to her.  She works in the community and loves her job. Tineka is saving up to go to Las Vegas for the first time and hopes to check out some boy band concerts on the Vegas Strip!
